CAPE YORK
Making it to the tip of Cape York would have to be on every Australian 4wder’s bucket list. This series is a selection of black & white images from a 4WD Action DVD trip, which took a slightly different ‘road less travelled’ path to the tip of Australia.
The 4WD Action crew travelled from Cairns to the tip of Australia and back, in just under 2 weeks. Turning off the main road near a roadhouse in Bramwell Junction, the team took a 60km beach run along the east coast of Cape York. Using a route that hadn’t been travelled from start to finish by a car in over 20 years, we encounter everything from crocodiles, endless fishing, skeletons of cars claimed by the coast & washed up rubbish as far as the eye could see.
Taking over 5 days to complete the epic 60km trip, the team travelled along the coast each day during low tide until they were cut off by the high tides a few hours later at rocky headlands. Driving sections of the coastline 1km out on the seabed floor during extreme low tides, the team eventually completed the trip and continued their way to the tip of Australia. Only to take yet another alternative route, opting to travel the last few kilometres to the top of Australia by a small boat.
The DVD from this trip can be seen with 4WD Action Magazine issue #187.
